ADAPTATIONS TO CBD

As you likely know the Royal College announced their plans to clearly specify the accreditation requirements for CBD and where institutions have flexibility with respect to implementation; as well as making changes to the model, in order to address concerns voiced by stakeholders thus far. This is to involve a consultation process with key stakeholders. The CBME Leads and Postgraduate Deans are currently working with the Royal College to consider adaptations to improve CBD to address the challenges and unintended consequences that are placing undue stress on residents and program leaders, faculty, and staff. Lisa Colizza, CBME Lead, will be compiling suggested adaptations arising from our QI work to date and will reach out to PDs, CBD Leads, CC Chairs, PAs for input over the next month.

 

NEW ROYAL COLLEGE RESOURCES

This new learning module helps academic coaches co-create goals and learning plans with their residents and identify barriers and enablers for engagement.

 

This video series was developed in collaboration with Dr. Jillian Horton to support the Royal College Physician Wellness theme in providing an opportunity for a broad range of specialists and other health care professionals to reflect on wellness and coping in challenging times.

 

More educational material has been added to expand the web-based resource collection for program directors, medical educators and residents seeking to implement Leader Role training within their postgraduate programs.

 

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PLAN (THROUGH JUNE 23)

Please review the events and workshops being offered through June. Very relevant and timely for many key stakeholders and of importance to those transitioning in July. Note: The CC Chair Forum Feb. 27th, 5-6:30 registration is open. For other upcoming events including medSIS training please connect with Naz in the CBME Office @Moledina, Nazneen or register from the email your received.

 

PROGRAMS PREPPING FOR LAUNCH JULY 1 2023

Our medSIS partner, Cheyenne Reid is receiving the technical documents she requires to set up your program so you can begin your soft launch activities of trialing EPAs and running CCs using the CC Review Dashboard. There is a significant amount of medSIS training being offered in March/April and registration notice is out. Dr. Ilun Yang and Cheyenne Reid will review Completing EPA observations in MedSIS on March, 27th 2023 , 7 am (open with demo). A goal is to share the responsibility of planning, triggering, and submitting EPA observations to optimize the learning experience for residents, inform their CC review, and avoid expiries in the system that burden residents and derail time from their learning and clinical duties.

 

UPDATED CONTENT – Program Evaluation and QI

The dashboard that tracks national trends in the implementation of Competence by Design by postgraduate medical programs has been updated with the most recent data. The presentations of national and institutional data including our recent Resident Experience Survey (2022) shared at the CBME retreat (Nov.2022), as well as, the strategies for quality improvement generated by the participants that day can be found on the CBME website. They together with input from program leaders will inform the work of the CBME committees and our efforts to influence adaptations to the educational model with the Royal College.

Further clarification on function of Competence Committee (CC) and Resident Program Committee (RPC) with respect to ratification of decisions of resident status and progression

  • Resident status and progression decisions can be made by the Competence Committee and this does not require ratification by the Residency Program Committee (RPC),
  • Competence Committee (CC) Chairs will provide an overall review of the CC activity; numbers and decisions made, procedures and processes used, challenges etc. to the RPC as part of the CC and program CQI. The postgraduate annual Competence Committee Check List should be used to provide the report to the RPC, with a copy to the CBME office.
  • Any disputes or challenging decisions should be reviewed by RPC.
