Introduction to Competence by Design

Module 1: Introduction Launch Module 1

The following modules provide a general introduction to Competence by Design and changes to come with the implementation of competency-based medical education in residency programs. In these modules faculty, senior learners, and other health care professionals will be referred to as ‘teachers’.

Module 2: Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs), Milestones, and Resident Assessment Launch Module 2

This module covers:

  • Definitions of EPAs and Milestones
  • Assessment in CBD
  • How to complete the Royal College Form 1
  • How to use an entrustment scale
  • Tips and tricks to incorporate feedback and assessment in practice

Module 3: Teacher as Coach Launch Module 3

This module covers the:

  • Role of teachers as coaches in the CBD system
  • Framework for coaching in the CBD system
  • Role of academic coaches in the CBD system

Module 4: The Power of Direct Observation...and Feedback Launch Module 4

This module covers:

  • The importance of providing direct observation and feedback to medical learners
  • Ways to overcome barriers to observation and improve the garnishing and nutritional value of the feedback ‘sandwich’.

Module 5: Competence Committees Launch Module 5

This module covers the role of Competence Committees in CBD.

Module 6: Review Launch Module 6

This module reviews what you need to know as a teacher in the CBD system.

In order to receive a Certificate of Participation, you need to complete the following quiz. Please note that the McMaster Postgraduate Medical Education Office will be able to see your response to the following questions. You score and responses will not be shared with individual departments or divisions.

Once you’ve completed the modules and course quiz, you may submit a request below to received a certificate of completion from the CBME Office.
